It was thought to be Franchino Gaffurio, Cappella‘s master at the Cathedral of Milan from 1484. The attribution to Leonardo which is universally accepted today came about with some difficulty. Some thought it was a collaborative work begun and set up by Leonardo, then finished by some of his students such as De Predis or Boltraffio. Recent scientific analyses have shown that the hand of the figure holding the scroll was added at a later time with different pigments and binders. Hence the hypothesis of a collaborator (Boltraffio?) who finished the work initiated by the Maestro. Nothing prohibits believing, however, that the addition was painted by Leonardo himself. The high quality of this painting is reminiscent of Flemish models, but above all sensitive to the optical lucidity of Antonello da Messina, who was documented to have been in Milan in 1475, and left works that have been lost today but which Leonardo probably saw. 展开>
