作品描述 Leandro Erlich, Bâti ment (2004), Nuit Blanche, Paris, France, 2004. Digital print on linoleum, lights, iron, wood, and mirror © LeandroErlich Studio This well-known installation allows visitors to defy gravity by hanging from or standing on the façade of a traditional building. To achieve this effect, a large mirror is placed at a 45-degree angle above the façade (positioned on the floor or ground). Visitors can spontaneously interact with the piece and with each other as the participants come and go. Photography is an inherent ingredient of this enduring work that has traveled the world (France, Australia, Argentina, Japan, Ukraine, the UK). Originally created for the Nuit Blanche in Paris in 2004, Erlich has sought to establish a conversation with the urban landscape that also serves as a gathering place. This new Bâtiment is inspired by the classic signs and fire-escape façades of Chinatown, a place beyond China’s borders but installed here within the heart of China itself. This gesture reminds of the inevitable distance between representation and essence and how easily we accept a tourist’s image of a city or its culture. Instead of overcoming this obstacle (trying to offer an “authentic Chinese” building) this installation points towards the inherent promiscuity of identity and the reductive nature of reproduction.
