Mirage or Reality
The exhibition is inspired by The Sims, a role-playing game. Players customize their sims in the game, and each sim has different personality traits and can experience the same scene as real life in the virtual world. The reason why players are fond of this game is that it can recreate life as well as reflect with real life and think in another way. This exhibition starts from three chapters: Daily Life, Mirage and Virtual, hoping to bring you the same feelings.
The philosopher John Dewey brought up the idea that "art as experience", and the chapter of Daily Life discusses the role and state of daily life and experience in the artistic context, including artists' use of daily materials, in order to inspire us to understand the interaction between artistic experience and daily experience. In The Republic, Socrates raises three kinds of being -- form, daily objects and artistic creation. In this chapter, symbolizing that "life as aesthetics", the whole exhibition space is presented as a pure white living room, where artists' creations are distributed "tangibly" and "intangibly" as a continuation of daily life. We can see that artists pay attention to the consumption of life through constant manual labor on daily materials, express their emotional experience after being attracted by different life and social events, extract material information from the logic of life to present the moment of daily state so as to build a space to be read, and with first person perspective, put forward topics that seem humorous but actually stimulate thinking and forth questions on daily experience and daily rules that are difficult to answer.
The world is an illusion, reality is a dream, and dream is a reality. The chapter of Illusion presents the high level of spirit created by human subconscious, and the visitors can experience life that may happen, expect to happen and will happen in this exhibition space.
Research shows that two-thirds of people have experienced "déjà vu" when we feel we have already experienced the scene which actually never happened before. This may be because some impression has hidden long before in the subconscious during dreaming, or because in the dream we have seen the scene that is to be happen, which often confuses us between reality and dream. The mechanical butterfly at the entrance of the exhibition space indicates Zhuang Zhou’s Butterfly Dream, which works as a key to open the interconnected space and takes us into the somniloquy created by artists. The vision and narrative randomly appearing in dreams give us hidden inspiration just like precursors. The operation of dreams is indeed close to the subconscious of id. To dig the truth behind appearances, sometimes we need to understand people as well as dreams. In the meditation room the visitors can transform their state through consciousness to heal their mind and explore their inner spirit. Also, they can refrain from excessive dependence on electricity caused by battery anxiety through charging electronic organs like blood transfusion to the body with a specific device - E-BLOOD BAG. Freud proposed that "dreams represent the realization of people's subconscious wishes", and you will enjoy "good dreams" in this chapter.
In the real world, we use consciousness to control our bodies, the network however is a new connection mechanism. All data in the network are records and representation of consciousness. The chapter of Virtual shows a future-oriented way of being.
The virtual world is free from the limitation of time and space, flowing and irregular forms could be presented, encompassing virtual works, virtual exhibitions and other freer art forms. The fascinating part of The Sims lies in the fact that in the game you can create your wildest imagination and things impossible to do in reality at will. With The Sims as a creating tool, the artist has built a fantastic scene for us, such as the swimming pool on the roof covered with huge roses. This utopian and dystopian concept also confirms the inevitable gap between reality and virtuality. The concept of "being digital" put forward by American scholar Nicholas Negroponte has become a reality today, and brings a brand-new way of being. Blockchain technology, which originated from Bitcoin, came into being at the historic moment. In the mobile blockchain experience center built by artists, visitors can use virtual reality technology to feel Tulpenmanie in the bubbles blown by mass media. In addition to virtual reality, artificial intelligence, another aspect of intelligent simulation, is also widely used. Artists use the "electronic pets" incarnated by UAVs to pose questions about consciousness, self and thinking in the fields of artificial and intelligence. In A Brief History of Tomorrow written by Yuval Harari, the ultimate fate of human beings is expressed with amazing predictions: creatures themselves are a process of data being constantly processed, and only 1% of people will complete the evolution and upgrade into new species in the future, which is also the model and symbol speculated by artists. And how should we pursue the goal that has been repeatedly mentioned for thousands of years - immortality and happiness? Maybe you could find the answer in the exhibition.
Your life will restart from here...
